Paxton House – Location
Paxton House is located in the picturesque Cotswold village of Blockley, Gloucestershire.
Blockley has a fine Parish church, hotel, public houses, and local shops. The neighbouring towns are Moreton-in-Marsh (about 4 miles), Broadway (about 5 miles) and Stow-on-the-Weld (about 8.5 miles). London is about 85 miles away and can be reached by train from Moreton-in-Marsh, with Intercity and Sprinter services.
Blockley has been an important Cotswold parish over many centuries. In the Bishop of Worcester's survey of 1299, there were three mills on the Blockley Brook. By the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries there were eleven, of which by Georgian times, eight had been converted from corn milling to silk milling. After the collapse of the silk trade in the latter part of the nineteenth century, the mills transferred to other uses including corn threshing, wood-sawing, cider making, piano manufacture, iron foundry, collar making and soap production.
Paxton House makes an ideal base for exploring the many traditional English villages and countryside of the Cotswolds, and is within easy reach of many other attractions, including:
- Golf at Naunton Downs and Broadway.
- Racing at Cheltenham, Warwick and Stratford upon Avon.
- Hunting with the North Cotswold and Heythrop Foxhounds.
- Theatres at Stratford-upon-Avon, Cheltenham and Chipping Norton.
- Music Festival at Cheltenham & Chipping Campden Musical Society.
